Working in partnership with the DTN Academy, Teesside University and Northumbria University, in 2022 Map created fifteen apprentices across various areas including:
Anyone can qualify for an apprenticeship – it is not just school leavers. Apprentices are often those wanting to upskill or change their role within their current employment.
Apprenticeships play a key role in creating the strong local workforce we need here on Teesside. Map will continue to offer these kinds of opportunities as it upskills its workforce into 2023.

Companies in the Tees Valley are working together to train a workforce for the digital telecoms sector.
Hartlepool College of Further Education is working with Seymour Civil Engineering and the Tees Valley’s Digital Telecoms Network Academy (DTNA) to provide the training opportunities in Stockton and Hartlepool
Roy Fraser, business development director of DTNA said: “The work going on at the Seymour Skills Academy is fantastic, real exemplary practice across their sector.
“We can all see how that work alongside the expertise we have developed at our Stockton site can provide all the knowledge, skills and behaviours that our sector needs.”
The partnership has been given funding by the Tees Valley Combined Authority and will provide free training so people can develop the skills for roles in the sector.
The Seymour Skills Academy, in Hartlepool, was established n 2019 and trains young people, adults and apprentices in the construction industry.
The new programmes are delivered from the Hartlepool academy and the DTNA site in Stockton, dependent on career route.
Mr Fraser added: “With the pooling of our expertise we now have routes to be a telecoms engineer or a telecoms construction operative, in fact learners can move across the programmes dependent on the jobs available. This has vastly increased the future job roles we can help fulfil in this in-demand sector.”
One of the major employers for these future roles is City Fibre, which has a three-year recruitment and training programme to provide up to 10,000 people with jobs upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure to full fibre, and plans to replace Middlesbrough’s copper networks with gigabit-capable full fibre optic connectivity.
The newly formed partnership aims to train over 100 learners in the next six months with the emphasis on providing career opportunities for Tees Valley residents.
Darren Hankey, principal and chief executive of Hartlepool College said: “We are really excited about our new partnership with DTNA, it’s clear to see how this can build upon and compliment the excellent work we do with Seymour.
“However, this couldn’t happen without the support of Tees Valley Combined Authority. Their flexibility in changing the adult education budget has allowed us to provide the qualifications that employers want and need.”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “The engineering and telecoms skills needed to connect people and businesses across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool are in huge demand.
“Growing this sector, which has one of the fastest growing jobs markets, is an important part of my plan for jobs, a plan that is delivering good-quality well paid jobs for local people.”
“It’s fantastic to see Hartlepool College, DTNA and Seymour come together to give people these much sought-after skills and training they need to succeed in the hugely important sector.
“Digital connectivity is at the heart of our longer-term plans to grow our economy in response to the coronavirus pandemic, and we’re already working with Seymour at the Teesworks site where they are also delivering vital construction jobs for local people, which is what is needed now.”

Nearly every home and business in Middlesbrough will gain access to next-generation broadband thanks to a multi-million pound investment.
The town is to benefit from an investment of over £42m as part of CityFibre’s plans to help replace the UK’s legacy copper networks with gigabit-capable full fibre optic connectivity.
The state-of-the-art infrastructure is forecast to boost business productivity, while giving residents and businesses access to the UK’s fastest broadband services of up to 1,000 megabytes per second.
Detailed planning is already underway as CityFibre designs a network capable of serving Middlesbrough’s current and future demands.
Upon completion, the network will be in reach of nearly every home and business in the area, providing a platform for a new generation of “smart city” applications and the roll-out of 5G mobile services.
Jason Legget, as city manager at CityFibre, will lead the delivery of the Middlesbrough project, which is due to start in December.
He said: “Our network build is already progressing well in Newcastle, so it’s exciting to now look to our £42m Middlesbrough Full Fibre investment.
“We are working in close partnership with Middlesbrough Council to transform the town’s digital infrastructure, ensuring that the digital needs of those working and living in the town are met now, and in the future.”
MAP Group (UK) is constructing the network on behalf of CityFibre.
The company, based in Stockton-on-Tees, will use modern build techniques, including, where possible, utilising existing underground and overground infrastructure.
Their workers will follow Covid restrictions.
Mike Carlin, CEO at MAP Group (UK) said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this contract and CityFibre’s commitment to delivering the latest in full fibre technology to the town of Middlesbrough is both commendable and exciting.
“The scheme, along with similar projects across the UK, will transform communities – gearing them up for the future of connectivity in order to attract businesses, visitors and improve the lives of residents.”
Welcoming the announcement, Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston added: “Despite Covid, aspects of Middlesbrough are booming, and in 18 months’ time the incredible broadband speeds that CityFibre is bringing will help us to create more business and more jobs.
“We welcome CityFibre’s investment in our town as it furthers our aim of providing a future-proofed full fibre digital infrastructure and a greater choice for the people of Middlesbrough.

Map Group’s latest recruitment wave will add to its 400-strong headcount and potential candidates don’t need to have any experience sector as full training will be given.
The company, which also has offices in Peterlee, is one of the leading independent providers of technology services to the UK communications market.
Successful candidates will all be employed directly by Map Group and while some prior experience may be preferable, says Chief Executive Mike Carlin. Map Group’s partner the DTN Academy will walk recruits through the training.
“We will then put them out in the field, in various aspects of fibre-optics,” he said.
“We are looking to try and fill as many roles as we can with local people.
“These roles will reinforce our current workforce and also increase our headcount in other areas.
“We will be taking on apprentices as well as bringing in people who have no experience.
“This is one of the biggest growth industries in Britain, broadband is needed everywhere.
“We are going from strength to strength as a business, expanding other areas as well.
“We are an associate of Cornerstone Business Solutions and have also just acquired Cablecom.
“It’s a very progressive area.
“There will be a shortage of labour nationally; the more personnel we have, the more we can deliver to our clients.”
An open day will be held for applicants to gain an idea of what is required in the roles prior to interview stage, he added.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen posted about the recruitment drive on Facebook.
He said: “Just got off the phone with Mike Carlin – Chief Executive of Map Group (UK)
“Good news is: he tells me there are 150 telecoms jobs available! If you get through, they’ll put you on a proper training course and offer you a guaranteed position.138259102799
“With salaries starting at £24,000, and onwards up to £40k+, it’s definitely worth going for.
“Local workers must always come first, so get applying!”
